Chris Brown drew the ire of an entire nation when the details of his domestic abuse with girlfriend Rihanna first came out in 2009. However, since then, he’s somehow managed to regain public favor and go back to winning awards and gaining mainstream recognition for his music, even so far as to reconciling with Rihanna in public recently.

On the MTV series ‘This is How I Made it’, Brown reflects on the situation and not blaming people for hating him. He says, "I can't hate people for making judgment on me, or making a decision of liking me or not liking me. All I can do is try to better as a person. And I'm good with knowing everything isn't always going to be perfect. [People are] always gonna know me for situations and life obstacles.”
He adds that winning the Grammy award was really the defining moment when he realized that the public’s perception had changed, saying, "For me to have that achievement [of winning a Grammy Award], and to go through people's whole opinions changing of me, to get personal opinion back and having to gain personal success back – it's not all the way back, you know – but it's been one of my most humbling experiences."
